The Black Tentacle is a special achievement award. It is handed out at the discretion of The Kitschies' board, which is comprised of editors, authors, marketers and social entrepreneurs.
The prize is awarded for a work or body of work that does not otherwise fit The Kitschies' criteria. The winner receives a hand-crafted tentacle and a bottle of The Kraken's black spiced rum.
The 2012 winner is The World SF Blog - a website dedicated to sharing links, news and original content from international contributors. The site also features a weekly series of short stories and essays which showcase new writers. The Apex Book of World SF 2 was also published in 2012, as well as an expansion of the "World SF Travel Fund", which helps bring fans to major genre events. The editorial team includes Lavie Tidhar, Charles Tan and Sarah Newton.
Previous winners include innovative comic book publisher SelfMadeHero (2011) and Donald Westlake's stunning posthumous novel Memory, published by Hard Case Crime (2010).
